Stereo & Sound

What true stereo is, and why portable speakers lost it

Most music is mixed for two speakers. Most portable speakers give you one. Here is what goes missing, and how the space comes back.

Music is one of the purest experiences we have. So why are we living with half of it?

The short answer

True stereo is two separate sound sources, placed apart, each playing its own channel. Your ears do the rest. Between the two speakers, a stage appears: a voice in the centre, a guitar to the left, a room around them. Most portable speakers put both channels into one box. The stage folds into a single point.

How stereo works

A stereo recording carries two channels, left and right. When an engineer mixes a song, every instrument is given a place between them. Play those two channels from two speakers set apart, and your brain hears the differences in timing and level between your ears. It turns them into position.

That is why a singer can sound like she stands in the middle, even though no speaker is there. The centre is made from the space between. Take the space away, and the centre has nowhere to stand.

Why portable speakers lost it

Portability rewarded one object. One box is easy to carry, easy to pair, easy to sell. But two drivers a few centimetres apart cannot create a stage that needs distance. The channels blur together, and many speakers simply mix them down to mono.

Software can widen the impression. It cannot move the speakers. Distance is physical. You hear it, or you do not.

Pairing two separate speakers solves the distance. It brings back the friction: two things to carry, charge and connect. So most people stay with the single box, and with half the song.

What you hear when it returns

Put two speakers apart and the music opens. Instruments separate. The vocal settles in the centre. Reverb has room to trail off. It is the same song, with the air back in it.

One speaker that opens into two

CoAudio OneTwo is carried as one. Open it, and it becomes a stereo pair you place apart, on a desk, across a balcony, either side of a room. One gesture. The space returns.
